India’s ‘father of palliative care’ comes to Victoria

See and hear from India’s ‘father of palliative care’, a 2018 Nobel Peace Prize Nominee, thans to Victoria Hospice.

Victoria Hospice and the BC Centre for Palliative Care will co-present the BC premiere of the feature-length documentary film, Hippocratic: 18 Experiments in Gently Shaking the World on on Monday, April 9 at 6:30 p.m. The film is an intimate and uplifting story based on the life and work of Dr. M.R. Rajagopal. A session with Rajagopalfollows.

Rajagopal, is a recipient of the Human Rights Watch Alison Des Forges Award for Extraordinary Activism, a 2018 recipient of the Government of India’s Padma Shri Award (one of the highest civilian honours), and a 2018 Nobel Peace Prize Nominee.

Hippocratic: 18 Experiments in Gently Shaking the World draws on the timeless wisdom of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr Rajagopal’s own profound insights, the film addresses key global challenges such as access to palliative care services; delivering health care in low‐resource settings; the tragedy of unnecessary suffering; and the opportunity to deliver ethical, whole‐person care through a grassroots movement.

In addition to the film screening, Dr. Rajagopal will lead Island Health’s Palliative Medicine Grand Rounds where physicians from all over Vancouver Island are expected to tune in via videoconference. He will then travel to Vancouver for a second film screening on Tuesday, April 10 at 6:30 p.m. Victoria and Vancouver are his only two stops in BC on his extensive North American tour.
