Next Saturday brings a chance to cross off some of those items on your Christmas shopping list while helping some local residents build the skills needed to succeed in the workplace.

The Garth Homer Society Community Holiday Market runs Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Garth Homer Centre, 813 Darwin Ave. The Dec. 2 market promises a large assortment of unique homemade gifts in a festive atmosphere. Admission is $2 or donation of a non-perishable food item. Children under 12 are admitted free.

The Garth Homer Society’s Employment Services assists individuals with developmental disabilities to find employment opportunities in our community. For some, self-employment offers the flexibility, creativity, and independence needed to thrive.

“The market gives clients encouragement and also financial support for their businesses,” said Benedicta Osubele, supported self-Employment vocational counsellor.

The Garth Homer Society supports clients with a passion, hobby, or service that they want to hone and bring to the marketplace - helping each entrepreneur learn as much as they can about running a micro-enterprise and develop the skills to be working professionals.

Market vendor Cody Tsatsanis smiles broadly when talking of the market. “I like selling my stuff at the craft fair… it’s for my job, and I like people coming to see me.”
