Head to Oak Bay Recreation Centre rink for a family skate this weekend.

The Family Day weekend gets underway in Oak Bay Friday with the Family Fun Festival at Henderson Recreation Centre.

From 5:15 to 7:15 p.m. Feb. 10, kick off the weekend with a bouncy castle, active games, face painting, crafts, popcorn, snacks and prizes. Complete the passport to fun for your chance to win a free golf party.

Also Friday night, Feb. 10, Embrace the Night with a walk under the full snow moon with the Community Association of  Oak Bay, launching its fourth year of community walks.

Meet at the south side of the Oak Bay Marina parking lot next to the Salish Sea sculpture, off Beach Drive at the foot of Currie Road for a 5 p.m. start before the full moon rises at 5:30 p.m. An age- and family-friendly initiative, the walk goes rain or shine.

Keep active over the weekend with Valentine’s Day and Family Day skates and swims.

Head to Oak Bay Recreation Centre Sunday, Feb. 12 from noon to 4:30 p.m. for a Family and Everyone Welcome Skate, plus an evening Everyone Welcome from 8:30 to 10 p.m. Wear pink or red and bring your friends, family and sweetheart to enjoy fun, games and on- and off-ice romantic activities.

The fun continues with a free Family Day Skate and Swim at Oak Bay Recreation Centre Monday, Feb. 13

Lace up from 1:30 to 3 p.m. for family-friendly music and games, a pre-school coned-off corner and an off-ice colouring and craft station. Skate rentals are regular price.

From the ice to the pool, the Family Day Swim offers plenty of fun from 3 to 5 p.m. Join the everyone welcome swim for extra fun, activities and prizes.

Volunteer as a family at the at the No Ivy League at Uplands Park Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. Meet at the first boat ramp at Cattle Point and help remove English ivy. Tools, gloves and instruction provided. For information call Margaret Lidkea, 250-595-8084 or mlidkea@shaw.ca

Venturing into downtown Victoria, the Royal BC Museum features a selection of family-friendly fun.

Feb. 12 brings Wonder Sunday: Our Multicultural World from 1 to 3 p.m. Learn about the diversity of traditions in B.C. and celebrate Chinese New Year, Black History Month and more. Sessions continue Feb. 19 and 26 and attendance is included with admission or membership.

Spend time at the museum with those you love on Family Day, Feb. 13. Curious about the coming Family: Bonds and Belonging exhibition? Get a sneak peek at the interactive features of the exhibition from 1 to 3 p.m. Make sure your family – whatever you consider it to be – is represented in the exhibition by sharing your story of what family means to you.

 

Family friendly hot spots around Oak Bay

• It’s not too early for a beach day – bundle up and head to Willows or Gonzales.

• Make a splash in the Oak Bay Recreation  Centre pool or take a spin around the rink.

• Celebrate Canada’s national winter sport by gathering friends and family for a rousing game of road hockey.

• Explore the local scenery with a walk up Anderson or Gonzales hills.

• Bring a set or two of binoculars and see how many birds you can spot at Cattle Point.

• Head to the University of Victoria’s CARSA gym to cheer on the Vikes in top-flight basketball action as the men’s and women’s teams take on Winnipeg.

• Spend time together, relax, have fun and try something new!
