Event spins support for mental health

Looking after yourself also means taking care of your mental well-being and that of the people you care about.

For the past 60 years, national Mental Health Week has served as an important reminder of that. The theme for this week’s provincewide event is ‘Thank You for Trusting Me,’ which recognizes the value of individuals who are a source of support for people living with mental health challenges.

The awareness week was founded nationally by the non-profit Canadian Mental Health Association. Last year, the B.C. division of the CMHA helped more than 18,000 people through research, education and support.

To mark the 60th anniversary and raise funds for youth mental health initiatives, the Ride Don’t Hide spin-a-thon happens May 7 from noon to 2 p.m. at Steve Nash Fitness World and Sports Club locations.

The spin-a-thon also celebrates Vancouver cyclist Michael Schratter reaching the halfway mark in his journey around the world for mental health.
