A little rain after months of drought wasn’t enough to save the Halloween community bonfire in Oak Bay.
Public works, parks, police and fire departments work alongside the Kiwanis Club of Oak Bay to bring the family-friendly event to Firefighter’s Park each Halloween.
The team tentatively rescheduled the fire after pandemic cancellations in recent years but warned the unprecedented drought could spell the end of the event.
Unfortunately, due to weather conditions, the district announced Monday (Oct. 24) there would be no fire this year.
Instead, Oak Bay firefighters will be parked on Oak Bay Avenue for trick or treating.
That night Oak Bay Village brings back its popular Trick or Treat on the Avenue with spooky entertainment and live music. Carved, illuminated pumpkins light up street poles to add ambiance for the event that runs Oct. 31 from 2 to 5 p.m.

Oak Bay is not the only municipality to see a community fire cancelled by this year’s dry weather.
Central Saanich also postponed its annual Halloween fireworks and bonfire in Centennial Park. Central Saanich and Saanich both suspended fireworks and open burning until further notice because of the extreme fire risk posed by dry weather conditions.
