Join other Canadians across the country on Sept.15 to make Canada safer and more beautiful for our marine life and wildlife, not to mention for the humans too.

The Community Association of Oak Bay is hosting a beach cleanup at McNeil Bay as part of the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup – an initiative organized by Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre and World Wildlife Fund Canada.

The local beach clean-up crew, gathered by the Community Association of Oak Bay, has been cleaning McNeil Bay’s shoreline for the last five years. Volunteers pick up and tabulate the trash collected (bottle caps, cigarette butts, plastic bags, paper, rope, fishing net, garden furniture…they even found a young, dead porpoise one year). Trash categories are totaled up and sent to the national Shoreline Cleanup, and a record is kept to see how different areas are doing.

To Oak Bay’s credit, there isn’t much trash on McNeil Bay – only several garbage bags collected each year.

Everyone is welcome to join in. Just bring a garbage bag, gloves, and rain gear if appropriate.

The Community Association’s annual shoreline cleanup at McNeil Bay is from 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15.
