The sweet smell of success is filling the offices of one Saanich-based business, along with the aromatic scent of freshly brewed coffee.

Oughtred Coffee was named Macro Roaster of the Year by Roast Magazine, a North American publication which has been honouring the best macro (over 100,000 pounds) and micro roaster across the continent for the past 15 years or so.

“It’s such a huge achievement to be recognized for what you do,” said Nelson Teskey, Oughtred’s director of manufacturing and director of coffee. “To see all the work that everyone has put in at Oughtred, to be recognized was just a great honour.”

Oughtred is just the fourth Canadian company to receive the award, and the first in Western Canada.

A total of 16 people work out of the Oughtred’s head office on Vanalman Avenue in Saanich, while the company produces close to a million pounds of coffee a year out of its roastery in Delta.

Oughtred Coffee was founded by John Oughtred in 1973, and is now run by his two sons John and Michael. The company’s products can be found in cafes, restaurants and bulk dispensers at grocery stores across B.C., with Oughtred producing more than 400,000 kilograms of coffee a year.

“You’ll see our coffee all over the place but you might not know you’re drinking it,” said Teskey.
