Off to Google: Victoria’s Ann Makosinki competing at 2013 Science Fair

The Victoria teen invented the 'Hollow Flashlight' which runs heat from human hands and Peltier tiles, which strategically produce energy.

Ann Makosinki’s profile has taken off. You can credit Google, because it’s their Science Fair she’s off to. You can credit Mashable and the countless other media outlets who have covered her.

But, most of all, you can credit Makosinski, herself. The 15-year-old Victoria student with the flashlight that runs off the heat of the human hand – the ‘Hollow Flashlight’, she calls it – is all set for tomorrow’s flight to California, where she says she’s ready rep her province and country.

Makosinski (is there any chance we can coin her nickname as ‘Mako’ before it’s too late? Canada’s ‘Science Shark’, maybe) is the only Canuck in this year’s Google Science Fair, and she’ll be competing in the 15-16 age category.

“I am super excited to represent Canada at the Google-wide Science Fair, and as I’m the lonely Canadian, I guess there’s a lot of Canadian pride on me, as well,” she said earlier this month.”

“I think it would be so wonderful if we could just try eliminating batteries more and more, and I think my idea… could also be used in other devices, such as medical devices, and I’m looking into other practices for it, as well.”

After the Google fair, Makosinski will present at two TEDx events near her home in Victoria – Sept. 28 in Redmond, Wash. and Oct. 19 in Vancouver.

Right now, though, her focus is on Mountain View, California.

“Usually people are nervous for weeks beforehand or a week before, but for me it happens right before I start presenting,” she told Jesse Ferreras of the Huffington Post B.C.

“And then once I start talking it slowly goes away, hopefully.”

The 2013 Google Science Fair officially kicks off on Sunday, Sept. 22 from the company’s campus in Mountain View.

As you might have expected, all of the event’s events can be followed live on Google’s own + page, and via Google Hangouts.
