The Island’s top senior high school basketball athletes square off in a battle of north and south Saturday at the University of Victoria.

The 30th annual Vancouver Island Seniors Classic All-Star Basketball Games involve this year’s best graduating high-school players from Vancouver Island, says Oak Bay High’s Brett Westcott, president of the hosting South Vancouver Island Basketball Association.

The action heads into UVic’s CARSA High-Performance Gym Saturday, April 8.

The games have the South Island’s best graduating male and female athletes challenge the best from the North Island in B.C.’s longest-running high-school all-star competition.

The boys “B” game opens competition at 3 p. m., coached by Camosun College’s Trevor Scheurmann and features Oak Bay High forward Jack Mulcahy and Chris McCulloch, a Glenlyon Norfolk guard.

The girls game at 4:45 p. m. includes Oak Bay High guard Fiona Headen and post Imogen White, along with Sylvie Galloway, a guard from Glenlyon Norfolk School. The 12-member squad is coached by Oak Bay High’s Rob Kinnear and Spectrum Secodnary’s Gary Baker.

The boys “A” game tips off at 6:30 p.m. Coached by Camosun’s Scot Cuachon, the South Island Boys A team features Oak Bay guards Jaden Touchie and Isaiah Romanow.

The South Vancouver Island Basketball Association was established in 1986 by local coaches to provide basketball activities for male and female players during the “off-season” between April and August. Other activities include a Run and Gun Spring League, with more than 300 players in four divisions on 22 teams, the FAB 50 Spring Camp Girls and SVIBA Summer Select Teams, Women’s Showcase, Island Summer Shootout and Canadian Summer Tipoff Tournaments.

Admission to Saturday’s games is $8 for adults and $5 for students, including a program.
