Jock Talk: Oak Bay Half Marathon is fast approaching

High school sports a hotbed of action in coming weeks

The Oak Bay Half Marathon, Relay, 10K and Kids Run is quickly approaching, with all races starting and finishing at Windsor Park May 28. Learn more and register at oakbayhalf.com.

Oak Bay cricket returns Saturday, May 6 when the University team hosts United at noon in Windsor Park. Sunday, May 7, has Oak Bay hosting Cowichan, also at noon in Windsor Park.

Oak Bay senior girls’ rugby continues on Friday, May 5 when Oak Bay visits Esquimalt to take on the hosts and Stelly’s secondary. May 12, Oak Bay tackles St. Michaels University School B and Spectrum at Lansdowne school.

As senior boys rugby heads into playoffs, Oak Bay High will be a hotbed of action Thursday, May 11.

First and second-place teams from Tier 1 face off for the Howard Russell Cup, with the winner representing the south Island in the May 18 game against the North Island AAA1.

The Colonel Hodgkins Cup brings together the third-place Tier 1 league finisher and the highest-seeded Tier 2 AA team. Tier 2 Community Bowl features the fourth-place Tier 1 league finisher and the highest-seeded Tier 2 team. All four teams then play May 18 in the south Island-north Island AA or AAA crossovers.

Finally, the Tier 2 Community Shield has the next two highest remaining Tier 2 finishers battling.

High school tennis play brings Oak Bay athletes to Henderson and Lambrick courts Tuesday, May 9 and Wednesday, May 10 for the AAA and AA playoffs. Semifinal play begins Tuesday at 4 p.m., with finals Wednesday at Lambrick and consolation play at Henderson.

The senior girls soccer championships take place on Tuesday, May 9. While teams are still being determined, visit lowerislandschoolsports.ca for more information.

Following this week’s 2017 Police Tournament at Olympic View Golf Course, high school golfers return to the links at View Royal’s Highland Pacific Tuesday, May 9 for the Lower Island Tournament. Tee off is at 11 a.m.

In regional high-performance baseball, the Oak Bay-based Victoria Premier Mariners return home Saturday, May 6 to host the North Shore Twins in a doubleheader at Layritz Field, with first pitches at 1 and 3:30 p.m. Sunday brings the Coquitlam Reds, also to Layritz, with games played at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

The Victoria Premier Eagles host the same Mainland teams on opposite days, with games both Saturday and Sunday at 12:05 and 2:35 p.m. at Lambrick Park.

And for Oak Bay auto racing fans, action returns to the Western Speedway oval Saturday, May 6, with the Super Sprints, Late Model Drivers Challenge Twin 50s, Stock Cars, and Dwarf Cars. Practice starts at 3:30 p.m. with the grandstands opening at 4:30 p.m. and qualifying 5:30 p.m. Fan Fest gets underway at 6 p.m., time permitting, with racing at 6:30 p.m.
