Cricket returns to Oak Bay this week with a force

With only a month left in the season, cricket returns this week with a force. On Saturday, Aug. 5, Oak Bay hosts the Incogs at St. Michaels University School at 12 p.m. while the University team takes on the Islanders at Beacon Hill park at 12. The next day, Sunday, Aug. 6 the Colts play the Alcos at Beacon Hill park at 12 p.m.

The University of Victoria Cricket Club’s fundraiser is also this week, Monday, Aug. 7 at Beacon Hill Park. International cricket player and IPL coach Eric Simons comes to Victoria to host a three-hour bowling clinic and two-hour seminar. The bowling clinic runs from 3 to 6 p.m. Costing $50 per club (Div. 1 only) each club may send two bowlers. A seminar with Q-and-A session following runs from 7 to 9 p.m. and costs $20. Both events will take place at the Beacon Hill Park cricket ground.

Carnarvon Ball Club turns its attention to basketball this fall, piloting a program for girls. Registration is now open for girls born from 2005 to 2008 for U11 and U13 teams to be entered into the Victoria Night League. Oak Bay ball hockey fans can now play year-round as Greater Victoria Minor Ball Hockey launches a new drop-in fall/winter ball hockey league. Running Sundays from Sept. 10 to Jan. 28 for players from throughout the region, times will be set aside for players between six and 18 years old (birth years 2011 to 1999). On Aug. 20, Ryder Hesjedal’s Tour de Victoria will pedal through Oak Bay. The mass participation cycling event produced by the Ryder’s Cycling Society of Canada, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and supporting cycling across the country. While early bird specials have finished, you can still pay for any of the events until event day, with anyone under the age of 19 biking for free. Turning to lacrosse, with playoffs getting underway earlier this week, the Victoria Shamrocks host Game 2 in their series with the Burnaby Lakers on Saturday, Aug. 5 at the Q Centre. Game 4 hits the Q Centre floor Wednesday, Aug. 9. Game time for both tilts is 6 p.m.
