Editorial: News welcomes the season of giving

Oak Bay News brings readers the Giving Guide, showcasing some of the many opportunities people have to give back

Today, the Oak Bay News brings readers the Giving Guide, showcasing some of the many opportunities people have to give back in this community.

Compiling a list – by no means exhaustive – of some of the many not-for-profit organizations hard at work in here in Oak Bay and the Capital Region, brought awareness of just how fortunate we are.

From those supporting the arts and culture to those working to find cures for cancer and heart disease, these are all invaluable components to a healthy, happy community – and one of the main reasons the region is so often touted as one of the best places to live.

While our guide focuses on the value of planned giving, or arranging to leave part of an estate to charity, creating a legacy that lives on after we are gone, we also emphasize the importance of giving generally.

This is, of course, front and centre this time of year.

The Monterey Centre’s Santas Anonymous tree has been so popular with generous patrons in years past, that organizers asked for an enhanced tree this year, with even more opportunities for members and the community to give.

This weekend’s Sea of Lights will collect donations for Oak Bay Kiwanis and the Salvation Army, while the always popular Lighted Truck Parade on Saturday collects enormous amounts of food and cash donations for local food banks.

It all warms the heart, of course, and while we say thank you to all those generous souls who give of their time and pocketbook this time of year, we are also reminded that the need is indeed year-round.

So no matter what cause is close to your heart, be thankful and give.
