Coun. Kevin Murdoch hopes to hit the deadline for motions for communities to bring to the annual convention of the Union of BC Municipalities.

He has a pair of notions to bring forward and expects to present official motions to council during the June 26 council meeting.

First recognizing all three parties in the legislature have some plan for campaign finance reform, he plans to seek support for those changes at the provincial level to be reflected at the municipal level.

Second, he’ll pitch to council that the province align the Local Government Act guidelines regarding employees sitting on a governance board.

While that is prohibited in municipalities and regional districts, improvement districts aren’t excluded.

“It appears to be some sort of oversight,” Murdoch said during Monday’s council meeting. He plans to ask those be included in guidelines for employment.

The 2017 UBCM convention is set for Sept. 25 to 29 in Vancouver. UBCM deadlines for motions is the end of June. The next council meeting is June 26 at 7 p.m. in council chambers at 2167 Oak Bay Ave. Visit oakbay.ca to see the agenda ahead of the meeting.
