Strong winds leave BC Ferries’ passengers at Swartz Bay terminal

As 3 p.m. sailing for Vancouver boards, some travellers waited upwards of five hours

Heavy winds caused havoc for thousands of B.C. residents attempting to travel between Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland.

BC Ferries cancelled multiple late morning and early afternoon sailings from ferry terminals at Swartz Bay, Nanaimo, Comox, Powell River, Horseshoe Bay and Tsawwassen. Other afternoon sailings after 2 p.m. were weather dependent, while others were on time as scheduled.

Environment Canada issued a wind warning early Friday morning with forecasters expecting gusts of between 70-90 km/h in some areas.

Another storm is expected to hit Vancouver Island on Saturday evening, Dec. 15.
