Police find 32 vehicles unlocked in Oak Bay area

Around $3,500 worth of computer equipment stolen, impaired drivers suspended, and more.

This is the Oak Bay Police weekly media release for the week of Aug. 21 to Aug. 27.

Computer equipment stolen

Computer equipment valued at around $3,500 was stolen from a residence on Byron Street following a break and enter incident Aug. 21. Oak Bay Police said the crime was likely committed two days prior when the home was unoccupied for about five hours. In addition, investigators doors at the rear of the residence had been left unlocked, and there was no sign of forced entry. Police continue their investigation.

Bikes stolen

Two bicycles were stolen from behind the Oak Bay Rec Centre building on the evening of Aug. 21. Police found the cable locks securing the bikes were cut between the hours of 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. The bikes are described as a Cannondale “Quick” white in colour with a white seat with a pink logo on it, and a Kona “Calder”, green in colour with disc brakes and a titanium seat post.

Police find 32 unlocked vehicles in Oak Bay

During a routine patrol during the early morning hours of Aug. 21, Oak Bay Police officers found 32 unlocked vehicles in the Oak Bay area. This is standard procedure, as members of the Oak Bay Police Department routinely conduct foot patrols in the early morning hours looking for unlocked vehicles. Police secured these vehicles and notices were left for the owners to encourage better judgment next time.

Stolen property recovered

Oak Bay Police recovered a laptop, an iPad and various identification cards among other items that were stolen from unlocked vehicles in the area, following a call at 3:40 a.m. on Aug. 22 of a suspect male entering a car on Kings Road. Police attended the area and subsequently arrested two males in their late 20’s near Carnarvon Park. Both were found in possession of the stolen property. Fortunately, much of the recovered property has been returned to its owners.

Marijuana grow-op busted

Police received a complaint of marijuana plants growing in the rear yard of a residence in south Oak Bay on Aug. 23, which lead to the seizure of 24 mature plants that were subsequently destroyed. Charges are not being contemplated at this time.

Drivers suspended for impaired driving

Two motorists lost their driving licences for three days after they were caught drinking and driving between the hours of Saturday (Aug. 26) and Sunday (Aug. 27) morning. In the first instance, a 59-year-old male was stopped on Cadboro Bay Road at 11:20 p.m. as his vehicle’s lights were turned off. The second instance, a 31-year-old female was stopped for speeding on Foul Bay Road at 1:50 a.m. She also had more than the allowable amount of alcohol in her system. Both were prohibited from driving for three days.
