The Oak Bay News has earned top-three finishes in four Canadian newspaper awards.

In addition to a third-place Canadian Community Newspaper Award for historical writing for Christine van Reeuwyk’s Remembrance Day feature with the residents of Carlton House, the News has earned third in Canada for its circulation in the Great Idea Award’s Best Magazine category for Tweed, its quarertly publication celebrating the people and places of Oak Bay.

The community newspaper also earned a bronze award for its fall Women in Business special section and third in the best advertising category for an ad for Oak Bay’s own Avenue Gallery.

Word of the national awards came as the Oak Bay News team heads to Richmond this weekend to vie for three BC and Yukon Commnunity Newspaper Awards, including General Excellence, for overall newspaper excellence, Best News Feature Photo for a photo by van Reeuwyk from the annual Oak Bay High C4C head shave event, and a photo feature from last fall’s Royal visit.

“We are honoured to be recognized for the quality work our team produces each and every day. Whether it’s the stories that matter to Oak Bay or an opportunity to connect readers with local businesses and organizations, we believe a strong community newspaper helps build a strong community,” says publisher Janet Gairdner.
