A Victoria man is facing multiple charges after he was arrested Monday night for breaking into a woman’s home and then stealing her car.
It was just after 9 p.m. when officers were called to a home on Glasgow Street after a woman told police her home had been broken into while she was babysitting a young relative. She said her car keys, vehicle and purse — containing identification, bank and credit cards — were all missing.
Responding officers found some of her personal belongings nearby and a VicPD K9 team spotted the stolen vehicle in the 400-block of Gorge Road East, according to a release from the Victoria Police Department.
When police initiated a traffic stop the driver ran from the vehicle, carrying something in his hands. Concerned it was a weapon, and with the man running towards a small group of people, the officer instructed his dog to chase the suspect, police say.
The man was taken into custody a short time later and officers recovered a small change purse and sunglasses case, containing drugs and items stolen from the victim’s purse.
Police are recommending charges of break and enter, theft or a motor vehicle, possession of stolen property, obstruction, failure to comply with an undertaking and possession of a controlled substance.
