A large black bear tore through garbage cans in the Prospect Lake area of Saanich, residents reported to police yesterday.

A large black bear tore through garbage cans in the Prospect Lake area yesterday, say Saanich police.

A number residents in the 4600-block of Kerryview Dr. saw a bear rummaging for food in unsecured trash cans, which police found scattered around several homes.

Police are reminding homeowners to keep trash and food in their homes, or have bear-proof trash containers.

Residents can call the B.C. Conservation Officer Service if the spot a bear in an urban or residential area at 1-877-952-7277 (RAPP) or check out this website on dealing with bears.
