A driver who told police they hit the gas instead of brake in a rear-ender on Transit Road had her licence pulled for three days.

Oak Bay police were called to the two-car crash on Feb. 26 at 8:20 p.m. on Transit Rd at McNeill Avenue.

Police said the first driver stopped at a stop sign where the second driver hit them.

The 56-year-old woman driving the second vehicle displayed symptoms “consist with having consumed alcohol,” Oak Bay police said in a news release.

After blowing a “warn” on roadside screening, she was issued a three-day driving prohibition and the vehicle was impounded for three days. Both vehicles sustained significant damage, estimated to be over $12,000, and the first vehicle was also towed from the scene.

Grandson scammer hits Oak Bay

A resident thwarted a scammer on Feb. 27 who said they were their grandson in need of $8,000 for bail.

Suspicious, the resident contacted Oak Bay police. The individual did not send money or provide any personal information.

Police confirmed that the call was fake and an attempted fraud. This came around the same time Saanich warned residents after three scams over two days left victims out more than $27,000 in that community. In those cases, the scams started with a traditional phone call, but instead of asking for a bank transfer or other mode, an individual arrived to pick up cash.

Police remind residents that the courts won’t ask for cash to bail out someone in custody and to never send cash, cryptocurrency or any other funds to unknown persons, unverified addresses or bank accounts.

Anyone who has been scammed should contact local police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501. Visit antifraudcentre.ca for more information on various scams and how to stay safe.

Driver stopped doing nearly double speed limit

A driver doing nearly double, with no insurance, was stopped by police in the early hours of March 2 in the 3000 block of Henderson Road.

Officers on patrol clocked a Mazda pickup truck going 75km/h in a 40km/h zone. A check of the licence plate revealed the insurance had expired. The 21-year-old man driving had a novice licence, which includes a zero-blood alcohol level driving condition. After noting signs and a roadside screening, the man received a 12-hour driving prohibition and a $598 ticket for no insurance.

Parents called after drinking

A pair of teens were ticketed for drinking after police were called on March 1 at 7:10 p.m., to a report of teens causing a ruckus at a bus stop near Crescent Road and King George Terrace. Police found two 16-year-old boys had been consuming alcohol. Both were issued $230 tickets for consumption by a minor and their parents were notified. There was no damage noted to the bus stop.
