Whether you’re old enough to remember Ravi Shakar’s mesmorizing performance in the movie Monterey Pop or simply curious about the sound of sitars, tablas and classical Indian music, this concert should fit the bill.
The Society for Indian Classical Arts presents Enchanting Melodies for Sitar and Tabla on Saturday April 29 at 7 p.m.at the David Lam Auditorium at the University of Victoria.
The Hindustani classical concert features Kushal Das on sitar and Ramdas Palsule on tablas, who have both established huge followings in India for their virtuoso performances, said Dr. Sudhakar Ganti, an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science at Uvic.
“Ramdas is an amazing tablas player who’s played in Victoria many times,” said Ganti, who has been involved with Society for Indian Classical Arts and many of the music and dance shows staged by the student club during the past 10 years. “Kushal hasn’t played here before, but he has a great reputation as an accompanist and soloist in India. We’re very excited to present him here for the first time.”
Tickets cost $20 for adults and $15 for students, and are available at Munro’s Books at 1108 Government St. in Victoria or at the door. The David Lam Auditorium is at A144 in the MacLaurin Building.
