Oak Bay Mayor Nils Jensen and Oak Bay Tea Party Chair Sandy Germain met last week outside Scout Hall to strategize for the annual tea cup race. The race will take place at June 4 at 3 p.m. this year with twice the competition.

Sandy Germain said, “We’re going to have our present mayor Nils Jensen and our present chair, me, versus past mayor Chris Causton and past chair, Bill Murphy-Dyson.” Past against present will prove to be a race worth watching as Jensen and Causton have faced off before, but never has a double competition taken place including Oak Bay Tea Party Chairs.

The first year Jensen raced Causton, the previous mayor advised him to row fast and hard - a technique which Jensen trustingly adopted before sinking in the ocean off Willows Beach. After six years of racing, Jensen has learned the delicacy required to navigate an oversized tea cup with mismatched oars. He is determined to beat Causton alongside teammate Germain.

“It’s not to be missed,” Germain said. The last two weeks were spent training for the rigorous tea cup challenge. Germain and Jensen look forward to the traditions and exciting new additions to the Oak Bay Tea Party as the event celebrates its 55th anniversary.
