PHOTOS: Oak Bay Bays battle to bronze in junior boys basketball provincials

Two players named all stars at the B.C.’s in Langley

Seeded atop the pack heading into provincials, Oak Bay Bays battled to an 59-48 win over Vancouver College to clinch the bronze medal.

The Bays bowed out of title contention with a semi-final loss to No. 5-seeded Terry Fox Ravens who would go on to win the provincial tournament.

The junior boys basketball team kicked off the tournament in Langley with solid 74-41 win over Duchess Park on Saturday (Feb. 24). Olin Lakos led the scoring with 17 points, backed by Noah Beck for the Bays with 14 and Marcus Kao at 10.

The team defeated Fleetwood Park 59-48 – with Beck adding 16 points and Kao 13 – later that afternoon.

Lakos amassed 27 points and Kao 16 in Sunday’s 55-43 win over Collingwood before the team fell to the Ravens in the semifinals. Oak Bay mounted a charge late in the third quarter and erased a six-point deficit to tie the score and briefly pull ahead in the fourth before Terry Fox scored the game’s final seven points. Beck tallied 18 points and Kao 13 in the loss.

Kao was named a first-team all star and Lakos a second-team all star.

The junior girls finished provincials with two wins and a loss at Pacific Academy from Feb. 23 to 25.

Oak Bay’s senior girls team competes in B.C.’s Feb. 28 to March 2 and the senior boys hit the hardwood March 6 to 9, both at Langley Events Centre.
