The community group that brings talks and walks once again blends the two with an urban forest tour Sunday.
The Community Association of Oak Bay that hosts the Embrace the Night walks and Oak Bay Talks, brings a 90-minute Explore our Urban Forest Oct. 15.
Ron Carter, who leads the walk, hopes it becomes one of a number of seasonal walks to enjoy, learn and talk about trees as individual specimens and collectively as the Urban Forest.
“As Oak Bay’s municipal horticulturist and arborist for 15 of 17 years I grew to realize trees, especially our namesake Garry oaks, are the hardest working most valuable living thing in town,” Carter said. “I would send non-believers to the tops of our local hills to look down and realize how important that collective canopy of trees was to us.”
He hopes to similarly heighten awareness of residents to the role trees play in our urban lives. The walk is Sunday, Oct. 15 starting at 10 a.m. at Monterey centre (1442 Monterey Ave.)
“We will take participants to neighbourhoods of trees outstanding for their beauty, historical significance, wildlife value and even how they contribute to our well being and personal safety in these changing times,” Carter said.
