Impromptu party could spring up in the Turkey Head parking lot to mark Canada 150 and the Salish Sea.

Oak Bay resident Bill Smith, who came to Canada just in time for its centennial, was inspired by the Community Association of Oak Bay event where they talked about Turkey Head and potential there.

He learned Oak Bay contributed to the Canada 150 10-day celebration that culminates in a huge party Canada Day in downtown Victoria.

“There’s a huge percentage of the population that doesn’t want to go downtown,” said Smith. “There’s not a culture of street parties, I received a YouTube video from Ottawa it was trying to inspire people to have little parties in the street.”

It inspired him that weekend to call two people. If those two people got excited about it, he would pursue.

The first call didn’t go well, but the second boosted the plan.

“He said ‘We’ll just show up with a band and if people want to drive by with their cars and stop and wave flags they can’,” Smith said.

Smith threw together an Oak Bay Canada Day party that features a little O Canada and other performances.

“We’re going to position the event at the Salish Sea iron statue. Everyone is encouraged to bring their own chairs,” he said.

It would be an unofficial performance at the site of a potential performance area in Oak Bay, adjacent to the municipality’s first piece of fine art.

“You pull in with your chair you hear this violinist and about the Salish Sea,” Smith said, inviting all entertainers from poems to songs to “please come and perform a spontaneous performance.”
