Greater Victoria residents are invited to apply for an opportunity to expand their leadership skills and get to know their community better.

The Community Leadership Development program run by Leadership Victoria Society is recruiting candidates for its 17th year.

“This is a practical, non-academic leadership program aimed at people who want to make a difference in their community while committing to personal development and leadership growth,” said Susan Low, the executive director for Leadership Victoria Society.

“It’s transformative, but not in a kum-baya kind of way.”

Over nine months from September to May, the program combines 13 days of face-to-face workshops with a team project that creates a lasting positive impact for the community.

The projects give students a chance to try out different leadership skills under the guidance of a coach, and with peers who support each person’s learning goals. Participants are also matched with an individual mentor, and take part in a police ride-along experience.

Greater Victoria residents are invited to apply for the program, which accepts 24 students each year. Selection is based on blending participants from the public, non-profit, and private sectors, and looking for people who have demonstrated their commitment to community development.

Notable alumni of the program include Sooke Mayor Maja Tait.
