Though the 20th annual Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock is still a month away, Oak Bay High students are gearing up with a car wash fundraiser Aug. 19.

As in past years, drivers are invited to drop by the high school parking lot for a good cause and clean between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Led by students Trevor Izard, Deven Senerty, Claudia Singh and Kosar Raddie, the Oak Bay High volunteer team will send raised funds to Camp Goodtimes, a recreational and medically supervised getaway in Maple Ridge which brings in children with cancer for several weeks of fun and games.

Trevor Izard, entering his last year at Oak Bay High this fall, became interested in the annual car wash after watching his sister lead the event two years ago, which reaped $3000 in six hours. His brother has also volunteered at Camp Goodtimes.

“That’s what sparked me and got me involved. It’s kind of an eye-opener, too,” he said.

The high school has been involved in Cops for Cancer campaigns for years, including car washes, bake sales, bottle drives and fairs. More fundraising events will follow before and during Tour de Rock this year, including a bottle drive, fashion show, garage sale and Kids Fun Fair at Willows Beach.

On behalf of his volunteer team, Izard said, “We love to be involved in the community … Any kids diagnosed at a young age, we like to make their lives happy for a couple of weeks.”

The car wash at Oak Bay High runs 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 19 at 2121 Cadboro Bay Rd. To learn more about 2017’s Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock, visit tourderock.ca.
